What should I pay a visiting preacher?

"...the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.' (1 Corinthians 9:14)

There are no formal charges for this ministry. However, given the Biblical principle that preachers of the Gospel should be provided for by the church, a donation for his ministry is greatly appreciated.

All of James’ income is from one-off and regular gifts from those who support him in his university ministry.

How much?

There are no set fees. You should feel free to give whatever you feel is appropriate. If you would like a guide:

  • A 30 minute sermon or a 60 minute workshop may involve 2 – 4 (sometimes more) hours of preparation, involving exegesis, research, and writing.
  • Depending on the location, there may be anywhere between 30 and 120 minutes of travel required for a visit, which includes petrol costs.
  • While a visiting speaker may only present for 30 to 60 minutes, they may need to attend your meeting or event for a longer period of time.
  • The average salary for a pastor in many mainline denominations is between $25 – $35 per hour.
